As we
pursue the slimy path of the Liquid Devil we are reminded that God
says "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any
people" (Proverb 14:34).
Today society rots, cities seethe with corruption, votes are bought
with booze, promotions are made with booze, secrets are exposed with
liquor, marriages are shattered by it. Liquid Devil!
Joel the prophet wrote, "Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl,
all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine for it is cut off
from your mouth. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and
without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion and he hath the
cheek teeth of a great lion" (Joel 1:5-6).
In Habakkuk 2:5 God speaks of the one who "transgresseth by
wine...neither keepeth his home, who enlargeth his desire as hell."
And in verse 12 He thunders, "Woe to him that buildeth a town with
blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!"
In verse 15 the Bible blasts the man who promotes drink, sells it
or gives it away as He cries, "Woe unto him that giveth his
neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him."
The Ten Commandments insist that "Thou shalt not kill!" Strange
that people were all up in arms recently about the fact that forty
babies a year were being killed by plastic bags, while multiplied
thousands of people killed by beer, wine and whiskey in America
every years, over 25,000 on the highway alone!
"Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords,
and drank wine before the thousands" (Daniel 5:1). The drinking
party, the dancing and idolatry continued through the Babylonian
feast and before the end of this amazing chapter judgment had caught
up with the king, the Media-Persian army was within the city and
secular history tells us blood flowed ankle deep on the palace
floor. The power of Babylon passed away, and "in that night was
Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain!" (vs. 30) Thus wine
always destroys the nations or individuals who imbibe.
